Ottawa, Ontario, November 30, 2012—Today, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Labour Minister, congratulated Garda Security Screening Inc. and General Teamsters Local Union No. 362 on ratifying a new collective agreement at Fort McMurray Airport.
“I am very pleased that Garda Security Screening Inc. and General Teamsters have reached a new agreement,” said Minister Raitt. “Strong labour‑management relations benefit the economic prosperity and, in this case, the security of Canadians.”
General Teamsters Local Union No. 362 represents 25 employees at Fort McMurray Airport. These employees are responsible for the security screening of passengers, non-passengers and baggage. Their previous collective agreement expired on March 31, 2012.
Garda is the largest provider of pre-screening services for the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA). This fall, Garda Security Screening Inc. and General Teamsters also ratified agreements with five other Alberta airports.
The agreement was reached with assistance from the Labour Program’s Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service provides dispute resolution and prevention assistance to trade unions and employers under the jurisdiction of the Canada Labour Code.
