Minister Raitt commends agreement at the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport between Garda Security Screening Inc. and General Teamsters

Ottawa, Ontario, November 16, 2012—The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Labour Minister, congratulated Garda Security Screening Inc. and General Teamsters Local Union 979 on ratifying a new collective agreement for security screeners working at the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport. 

“I am very pleased that Garda Security Screening Inc. and General Teamsters worked together to reach a new agreement,” said Minister Raitt. “Cooperative labour‑management relations benefit the economic prosperity and security of Canadians.”  

General Teamsters Local Union 979 represents a unit of about 200 employees at theWinnipegJamesArmstrongRichardsonInternationalAirportwho are responsible for the security screening of passengers, non-passengers, and baggage. Their previous collective agreement expired on March 31, 2012. 

The agreement was reached with assistance from the Labour Program’s Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service provides dispute resolution and dispute prevention assistance to trade unions and employers under the jurisdiction of the Canada Labour Code
