(OTTAWA) - The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, announced today that Canada’s first Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO), Dr. David Butler-Jones, has been reappointed for a three-year term, effective September 24, 2011.
“Dr. Butler-Jones has shown tremendous leadership in protecting and promoting the health and safety of Canadians,” said Minister Aglukkaq. “I look forward to continuing to work with Dr. Butler-Jones to strengthen Canada’s health system, and I am pleased to announce his reappointment to this key role.”
Dr. Butler-Jones has held many positions in the fields of public health and clinical medicine and is recognized internationally for his contributions to them. Dr. Butler-Jones has also taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and has been involved as a researcher in a broad range of public health issues.
The Public Health Agency of Canada was established to promote and protect the health of Canadians through leadership, partnership, innovation and action in public health. The CPHO serves as the deputy head of the Agency, and as Canada’s lead health official.
