LA RONGE, SASKATCHEWAN, October 2, 2009—Youth facing barriers to employment will gain skills and work experience through the Government of Canada’s support for two employment projects. Mr. Rob Clarke, Member of Parliament for Desnethé–Missinippi–Churchill River, made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.
“In today’s environment, it is more important than ever that youth develop the skills they need to participate and succeed in the job market,” said Mr. Clarke. “By supporting these projects, we are helping youth in La Ronge and Grandmother’s Bay develop the skills, knowledge and work experience they need to reach their full potential.”
The Saskatchewan Tourism Education Council (STEC) will receive $35,275 in federal Skills Link funding to support its Tourism Careers – Ready to Work project, and the Kikinahk Friendship Centre will receive $65,428 to support its youth intervention and work experience program. Together, these projects will help a total of 16 youth develop life and job skills to ease their transition to work or return to school.
Skills Link focuses on helping youth facing barriers to employment, such as single parents, Aboriginal youth, young persons with disabilities, recent immigrants, youth living in rural and remote areas and youth who have dropped out of high school.
“This funding allows the Kikinahk Friendship Centre to operate a youth centre seven days a week because we will now have adequate staff,” said Mr. Ron Woytowich, Executive Director of the Kikinahk Friendship Centre. “It will be a big benefit to the community because our youth have told us they want us to be open seven days a week.”
“STEC is very appreciative of this support for the Ready to Work project. The tourism sector in Saskatchewan holds many excellent career opportunities. Currently, there are significant skills shortages in many key areas of the sector,” said Ms. Carol Lumb, Director of the Saskatchewan Tourism Education Council. “This funding will assist us in bringing the opportunities that tourism employers have to offer together with individuals who are eager to enter the workforce and will have developed strong entry‑level skills over the course of the Ready to Work project.”
The federal government is working with the provinces and territories, community organizations and other stakeholders to provide Canadians with the training, skills and opportunities they need to participate in the workforce and contribute to their communities.

The Government underscored its commitment to this strategy in Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Saskatchewan Tourism Education Council is a non-profit organization that provides education and skills training programs to help individuals prepare for careers in tourism. Between August 8, 2009, and March 20, 2010, the Tourism Careers – Ready to Work project will help 10 youth facing barriers to employment develop life and job skills that will help them obtain long-term work or a career in tourism, or return to school.
Established in 1976, the Kikinahk Friendship Centre is a multicultural organization that offers social, recreational and employment services in La Ronge. The Centre’s employment programs support individuals through training, workshops and workplace coaching. Between September 28, 2009, and April 9, 2010, the Kikinahk Friendship Centre will help six youth facing barriers to employment develop the job and leadership skills they need to enter the labour market or return to school.
As part of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy, the Skills Link program is one of three programs that help young Canadians, particularly those facing barriers to employment, obtain career information, develop skills, gain work experience, find good jobs and stay employed. The other two programs are Summer Work Experience and Career Focus.
Skills Link focuses on helping youth facing barriers to employment, such as single parents, Aboriginal youth, young persons with disabilities, recent immigrants, youth living in rural and remote areas, and youth who have dropped out of high school. It offers a client-centred approach based on assessing an individual’s specific needs. The program supports youth in developing basic and advanced employment skills. Eligible participants between 15 and 30 years of age—who are not receiving Employment Insurance benefits—are assisted through a coordinated approach, offering longer-term supports and services that can help them find and keep a job.
