Government of Canada Invests in Birdtail Valley Pasture Pickin' Jamboree

BIRTLE, Manitoba, March 9, 2010 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Inky Mark, Member of Parliament (Dauphin-Swan River-Marquette), today announced funding for the 4th annual Birdtail Valley Pasture Pickin' Jamboree.

The Birdtail Valley Pasture Pickin' Jamboree, first held in 2006, celebrates community spirit and camaraderie in Birtle. This year, the festival runs from May 22 to 24, and features bluegrass, traditional country, old tyme, and gospel music works performed by local artists. This festival kicks off the summer season by providing people of all ages with a weekend of great music and an opportunity to renew friendships.

"Our Government is proud to support events that offer Canadians the opportunity to celebrate their local culture and heritage and that contribute to the development of local tourism and the economy," said Minister Moore. "The Birdtail Valley Pasture Pickin' Jamboree will give residents the chance to share the richness and diversity of music genres in their region."

"The Birdtail Valley Pasture Pickin' Jamboree brings families and friends together. It also highlights the talent of artists in the community and surrounding areas and underlines the support of artisans and volunteers who work together to ensure the success of this wonderful event," said Mr. Mark.

"Local people have been very supportive of the Birdtail Valley Pasture Pickin' Jamboree and attendance has grown each year. Receiving this grant will be a great help in keeping this weekend going in our rural community," said Dwight Stewart, Treasurer of the Birdtail Valley Pasture Pickin' Committee.

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $1,400 through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.
