The NRC Institute for Information Technology's (NRC-IIT) 3D imaging and modeling technology made the front page of the prestigious GIM International (The Global magazine for Geomatics).
The November 2009 issue of the magazine features an in-depth article entitled Modelling the Erechtheion, which explores NRC-IIT's 3D framework for extracting information from a very large 3D image data set generated with terrestrial laser scanners (TLS), on the Erechtheion: a Greek monument located on the Acropolis, next to the Parthenon in Athens, Greece.

The cultural heritage sector has been of one of NRC-IIT's key areas of focus for research & development (R&D) in 3D technologies. In recent years, sensors and algorithms for 3D imaging and modeling of real objects, structures, and sites have received significant attention, not only in a number of research fields, but also in the automotive, medical, manufacturing, forensics, construction, and space exploration industries.
Many of NRC-IIT's 3D technologies have been adapted specifically for commercial applications such as the Space Shuttle inspection laser scanner and 3D data analysis technologies and inspection methods.
