Government of Canada improves safety at the Toronto City Center airport

TORONTO — Canada's Transport and Infrastructure Minister John Baird announced today that the Toronto City Centre Airport will receive funding for the construction of an aircraft rescue and firefighting equipment shelter.

"The Government of Canada is committed to investing in upgrades at our airports to enhance safety, security and efficiency," said Minister Baird. "The new aircraft rescue and firefighting equipment shelter is an important expansion that the airport will be able to use for years to come."

The airport will receive $893,750 to cover the cost of the aircraft rescue and firefighting shelter, which includes the addition of an extra bay, with an exhaust system, to the existing maintenance garage and firefighting facility. Construction will begin immediately, and the shelter is expected to be complete by the end of March 2010.

"The Toronto Port Authority appreciates the Minister's timely commitment to the City of Toronto's air travel infrastructure," said Alan Paul, acting president and chief executive officer of the Toronto Port Authority. "Passenger traffic at the Toronto City Centre Airport increased from 28,519 in 2005 to 508,574 in 2008, and we're expecting that number to increase materially in 2009. This project will ensure that our facilities continue to grow to meet the needs of the travelling public."

The funding comes from the 2009-2010 Airports Capital Assistance Program, ACAP, which funds capital projects related to safety, asset protection and operating cost reduction. Eligible airports must have year-round regularly scheduled passenger service, they must meet Transport Canada airport certification requirements and they cannot be owned or operated by the Government of Canada.

The Toronto Port Authority operates and maintains the Toronto City Centre Airport, which provides scheduled commercial air travel services to short-haul destinations throughout Canada and the United States. The provincial Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care uses the Toronto City Centre Airport as a base for air ambulance services. A number of small businesses provide aviation-related services at the airport.
