Government of Canada Supports Fisher River Cree Nation Band

KOOSTATAK, Manitoba, July 26, 2010 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, James Bezan, Member of Parliament (Selkirk-Interlake), today announced funding for the Fisher River Cree Nation Band.
This funding will assist in the production of the exhibition "Fisher River Cree Nation Exhibition Project," which commemorates the 135th anniversary of the signing of the Norway House Treaty in 1875. This initiative entails research, development, and installation of a temporary exhibition at the Leigh Cochrane Memorial Centre in the community of Fisher River Cree Nation. The exhibition, scheduled to open on July 27, 2010, will include wall-mounted panels with photographs, maps, and texts; an exhibition case with artifacts; and a digitized community history. The exhibition text will be translated into Cree by local elders.
"The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of preserving Aboriginal cultural heritage," said Minister Moore. "We are proud to support this initiative, which will capture and celebrate the experiences and perspectives of the people of the Fisher River Cree Nation."
"This exhibit will help increase public awareness and understanding of the rich and diverse cultures of Aboriginal peoples," said Mr. Bezan.
"This project will revisit the history of the Fisher River Cree Nation community and, more importantly, it will give our youth a better understanding of their past and where they come from," said David Crate, Chief of Fisher River Cree Nation. "We are grateful for the Government of Canada's support and we welcome everyone to Fisher River Cree Nation to view this historical project."
Fisher River Cree Nation is a rural First Nation located 200 kilometres north of Winnipeg. Through this project, Fisher River Cree Nation aims to compile and make accessible its community history, raise awareness and interest in the history and heritage of the community, and strengthen its capacity for the delivery of community strategies with respect to heritage.
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $23,295 through the Museums Assistance Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides funding to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to the treasures of our collective heritage.
