Toronto, Ontario, March 5, 2013—Speaking at the sixth annual Women in Mining international reception, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Labour Minister, outlined the importance of expanding Canada’s workforce to include more women in non-traditional roles.
“Canada’s mining sector is a vital contributor to our economic prosperity, yet the industry faces skills and labour shortages,” said Minister Raitt. “To remain competitive it must open the door to more women, who continue to be an untapped resource. Encouraging employers to take full advantage of Canada’s diverse workforce contributes to the country’s prosperity.”
She also pointed to the need for work–life balance to attract more workers. “Younger people, both male and female alike, generally prefer employment opportunities that can accommodate the responsibilities of having a family. Traditional roles have shifted and these are no longer simply women’s issues,” added Minister Raitt.
The reception was hosted by Women in Mining Canada during the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s international convention, trade show and investors exchange. The Association, established in 1932, protects and promotes the interests of the Canadian mineral exploration sector. It also provides advocacy, information and networking services to its members. The Association’s annual convention draws thousands of participants from across the globe.
The Labour Program develops, administers and enforces workplace legislation and regulations, such as the Canada Labour Code—which covers industrial relations, health, safety and employment standards for federally regulated workers and employers—and the Employment Equity Act.
