July 21, 2014 – Vancouver, British Columbia – Transport Canada

The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, today addressed members of the Vancouver Board of Trade in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Minister Raitt detailed Transport Canada’s commitment to the safety and security of Canada’s transportation system, as well as its challenges and priorities. She talked about the important role that businesses play as job creators in the Canadian economy.

Minister Raitt highlighted investments in Canada’s Asia-Pacific Gateway, and the opportunities brought by the New Building Canada Plan.

The Minister also spoke about Canada’s world-class tanker safety system; the work she is doing with BC’s Transport Minister Todd Stone to continue to maintain labour stability at Port Metro Vancouver; and the statutory review of the Canada Transportation Act, which is aimed at ensuring that Canada’s legislation supports a modern, efficient and competitive transportation sector that is able to respond to future demands.

“BC provides a crucial transportation link to the Asia-Pacific market, which is worth more than $34 billion in trade. Our Government has invested $1.4 billion in the Asia-Pacific Gateway, and it's essential that we continue to work with public-and private-sector partners to capitalize on those investments, to bring jobs and further prosperity to Canadians."
