CHALK RIVER, ONTARIO — The Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources, accompanied by Cheryl Gallant, M.P. for Renfrew–Nipissing–Pembroke, today visited the Chalk River Laboratories of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL).

Minister Oliver and Ms. Gallant toured the National Research Universal (NRU) reactor and the Biological Research Facility and met with employees and officials.

“The Government recognizes the value of the Laboratories to the nuclear sector,” said Minister Oliver. “I was happy to have the opportunity to see first-hand the work underway at the Labs.”

“ChalkRiverLaboratories has a long history of achievement in nuclear science and technology development,” said Ms. Gallant. “They have been key to nuclear innovation inCanadaand are an economic cornerstone of our region.”

The Government of Canada is currently conducting a review of AECL’s Nuclear Laboratories as part of the ongoing restructuring of the Crown corporation. The Government is in the process of analyzing expressions of interest in the Laboratories that were received in response to a public call for submissions in February of this year.

AECL's Nuclear Laboratories includes two main sites: Chalk River Laboratories (CRL), located inOntario, 190 km northwest ofOttawa, and Whiteshell Laboratories, located atPinawa,Manitoba. The Laboratories are home to researchers with unique capabilities and expertise.
