Government of Canada Celebrates Research and Development Success
October 14, 2011 — Ottawa, Ontario
The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology) today recognized Ottawa-based Energate Inc. as a Canadian Innovation Leader for linking scientific research to commercialization, jobs and economic growth.
“Our government would like to see businesses invest more in research and development, and Energate is a good example of the kind of success that can result from R&D,” said Minister Goodyear. “Innovation is vital to long-term economic growth. Our government is committed to creating the winning conditions for Canadian businesses and researchers to thrive in a globalized marketplace. And we remain focused on what matters most to Canadians — creating jobs and economic growth.”
Founded in 2004, Energate Inc. makes software to help manage home energy consumption and developed smart thermostats to help monitor power consumption in our homes. The company’s Consumer Connected Demand Response (CCDR) platform controls home energy use via the Internet while giving consumers access to smart meter data. This web-based portal enables Canadians to easily program thermostats remotely to manage home comfort and energy use. This device helps Canadians conserve energy and save on energy bills. Altogether, Energate Inc. has received $575,000 in financial contributions from the National Research Council of Canada’s Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP).

To highlight the Government of Canada’s long-standing relationship with this fine firm, Minister Goodyear presented Energate Inc. with a Canadian Innovation Leader Certificate. This certificate recognizes small and medium-sized enterprises that have successfully developed and applied innovative technologies linking scientific research to commercialization, jobs and economic growth. It emphasize the position of Energate Inc. as a role model for the whole country and for entrepreneurs in communities in all regions.
