Minister of Foreign Affairs concludes visit to Washington, D.C.

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, concluded a successful working visit to Washington, D.C., which took place on February 7 and 8, 2017.

The Minister met for the first time with her counterpart, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, to discuss shared priorities and areas of cooperation between Canada and the United States. The two underlined the importance of the economic relationship between their countries, which supports millions of middle-class jobs on both sides of the border.‎ They also spoke about the balanced and mutually beneficial trading relationship between Canada and the United States, as well as about softwood lumber.

The Minister and Secretary addressed security cooperation, continued support for NATO, the global fight against Daesh, the future of Syria and the situation in eastern Ukraine, among other international issues.

The Minister also held meetings with Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House of Representatives; Senator John McCain, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services; Senator Bob Corker, Chair of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations; and Senator Ben Cardin, ranking member of the foreign relations committee, to discuss the importance of the Canada-United States relationship.

Yesterday, the Minister also attended a reception at Canada’s embassy to celebrate women newly elected to the 115th U.S. Congress, as well as the contribution of women in politics.
