Minister Dion comments on criminal investigation into downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17

September 28, 2016 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

“Today, as we consider the interim findings of the independent Joint Investigation Team [JIT] on the downing of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17, we are reminded of the unspeakable suffering caused by this tragic attack.

“The interim findings make clear that a Russian-made Buk missile was fired from rebel-controlled territory in eastern Ukraine. The findings also show that the launcher used to fire the missile was transported from Russia and returned there following the launch.

“The conflict in eastern Ukraine, whose greatest impact has been felt by the civilian population, has had tragic implications reaching all corners of the globe.

“Canada appreciates the work and remains fully supportive of the JIT as it continues to uncover the facts and lays the groundwork for bringing the perpetrators of this attack to justice.

“In line with UN Security Council Resolution 2166 (2014), we urge full cooperation by all involved states to this end.”
