Minister Dion welcomes Qatari counterpart

The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that he will meet with Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, tomorrow during Minister Al-Thani’s visit to Ottawa.
Ministers Dion and Al-Thani will discuss Canada-Qatar bilateral relations, including trade and investment, education, and regional and international security concerns, including the threat posed by the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
“Qatar is an important partner for Canada in our work toward peace and stability in the region, in our efforts to counter terrorism as members of the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL and in international efforts to find a political solution in Syria.”

- Canada is grateful for Qatar’s role in the release of Canadian hostage Colin Rutherford.
- The College of the North Atlantic has a campus in Doha, Qatar, which is the largest Canadian educational institution operating overseas, and the University of Calgary operates the only nursing school in the city.
- There are roughly 8,000 Canadians in Qatar working in all sectors of the Qatari economy, including education and health.
