Government of Canada Invests to Create Youth Employment and Enhance the Economic Outlook for the City of North Bay

March 30, 2016 – North Bay, ON – Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario – FedNor

Anthony Rota, Member of Parliament for Nipissing–Timiskaming, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor, today announced a Government of Canada investment of $54,250 to create jobs for two young Canadians while supporting key sectors of Northern Ontario's economy, including technology and innovation, economic development and business growth.

The FedNor investment will enable two North Bay businesses to each hire a youth intern for a one-year period. While on the job, the interns will gain valuable work experience, performing tasks such as computer programming and web development, as well as helping to attract, recruit and retain skilled immigrants to address the employment needs of the region. Local organizations that will benefit from this announcement include WipWare and North Bay & District Multicultural Centre.

Since its inception, FedNor has helped provide more than 1525 young post-secondary graduates with their crucial first job, and assisted businesses and organizations in growing the economy by helping them access a qualified and talented workforce.

"Creating jobs and better opportunities for young Canadians is a key priority for the Government of Canada. Through FedNor's Youth Internship Initiative, we are helping recent graduates gain the work experience they need to start their careers and contribute fully to our economy."
