Minister Qualtrough recognizes World Down Syndrome Day
March 21, 2016 – The Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities, today issued the following statement in recognition of World Down Syndrome Day:
“On March 21st of each year we celebrate the immense contributions those with Down syndrome make to Canadian society.
Under the theme ‘My Friends, My Community’, this year’s World Down Syndrome Day will focus on ensuring that people with Down syndrome are able to enjoy full and equal rights and have opportunity to participate in their communities.
The Government of Canada is committed to raising awareness of the vast potential of people with disabilities and the contribution they make to their communities and workplaces and to ensuring that everyone has the same access and opportunities. By working with all Canadians, we will develop a more prosperous and inclusive society.
My mandate from the Prime Minister outlines as one of my top priorities that I lead an engagement process with provinces, territories, municipalities, and stakeholders that will lead to the passage of federal accessibility legislation. I am eager to hear from all Canadians during the engagement process and I invite and encourage everyone to get involved in the conversation.”
