Minister Bibeau statement on 2016 International Day of La Francophonie

March 20, 2016 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, issued the following statement marking International Day of La Francophonie.

“On this International Day of La Francophonie, we celebrate all of Canada’s francophones, francophiles and franco-curious who contribute to the vitality of their communities, and who help promote Canadian identity, principles, values and expertise on the five continents.

“Being part of La Francophonie means joining with a billion people to share in the values of peace, democracy and respect for human rights, and to help create a more united world in which young people and women are able to integrate and develop fully at the centre of all spheres of society. It also means being part of a vast network through which knowledge and experience are shared in an effort to come up with solutions to the major issues facing our world. To that end, Canada will play a role in the success of the 16th Sommet de la Francophonie in Madagascar in November.

“Canada’s participation in La Francophonie illustrates our country’s linguistic and cultural duality. It includes promoting diversity and good governance, strengthening the economy to combat poverty and supporting inclusive and sustainable growth within the Francophonie.

“Today is an opportunity to celebrate the French language as a mother tongue or as a second language. Happy International Day of La Francophonie to all Canadians.”
