The Government of Canada announces transfer of Long Pond Harbour to the Town of Conception Bay South

Transfer of small craft harbour a win-win for community and Fisheries and Oceans Canada

March 18, 2016 - Conception Bay South, Newfoundland-Labrador

Member of Parliament for Avalon, Ken McDonald, on behalf of the Honourable Hunter Tootoo, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, announced today that the Government of Canada is transferring Long Pond Harbour to the town of Conception Bay South, Newfoundland.

“We are proud today to celebrate the transfer of Long Pond Harbour to the town of Conception Bay South on April 1, 2016,” said MP McDonald.  “This harbour is an important community asset used by recreational boaters and we are very happy that those who take pride in using it will continue to enjoy it for many years to come.”

“Acquiring the waterlot perfectly aligns with the town’s vision in valuing our scenic coastline, landscape and waterways, ensuring a vibrant commercial sector and enabling healthy active lifestyles,” said Stephen Tessier, Mayor, Conception Bay South. “It will allow us to evoke a sense of place, invest in public spaces and build on our existing strengths.”

Conception Bay South will receive $1.6 million from Fisheries and Oceans Canada which will be used for ongoing maintenance of the waterlot, enhancements to adjacent areas and other maintenance and repair needs.

“Transferring ownership of this property to the Town of Conception Bay South means the harbour will be managed by, and for, the people of this community. I’m confident the future development of this important public asset will benefit locals and tourists alike.”
