Saint-Léonard improving key underground infrastructure thanks to government funding

March 17, 2016 – Saint-Léonard, New Brunswick – Infrastructure Canada

René Arseneault, Member of Parliament for Madawaska–Restigouche, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and Chuck Chiasson, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Victoria-la-Vallée, on behalf of the Honourable Brian Kenny, New Brunswick Minister of the Environment and Local Government, today announced $320,256 in joint funding for sanitary and storm drain system improvements in Saint-Léonard through the Small Communities Fund. Carmel St-Amand, Mayor of Saint-Léonard, also participated in the announcement.

Project work involves repairing the sanitary sewers and installing storm sewers along Industrielle Street. This will reduce the flow of storm water into the sanitary sewer system and decrease the burden on the waste water treatment plant.

The governments of Canada and New Brunswick are each contributing up to $160,128 to this project through the Small Communities Fund, representing two-thirds of the estimated $480,385 total project cost.

The $1-billion Small Communities Fund supports priority public infrastructure projects in communities across the country with less than 100,000 residents. The project announced today is among 43 others approved so far in New Brunswick for more than $59 million in joint funding under the program. These represent important investments in the green energy, drinking water, disaster mitigation and wastewater infrastructure needed to build stronger, more sustainable communities.
