Government of Canada Investment Supports Tourism and Growth in the West Nipissing Region

March 4, 2016 – Sturgeon Falls, ON – Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario – FedNor

Marc Serré, Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor, today announced an investment of $198,900 to help promote economic development and support tourism in the region.

The FedNor contribution will enable the Conseil des Arts de Nipissing Ouest (CANO) to hire an artistic director to help develop and implement a municipal artistic and cultural strategy. Specifically, the strategy will aim to position West Nipissing as a cultural tourism destination of choice, and help create new economic development opportunities.

The funding announced today is provided through FedNor's Economic Development Initiative (EDI), a Government of Canada initiative that is part of the Roadmap for Canada's Official Languages 2013-2018. The EDI helps foster the development of new expertise in innovation, economic diversification and business growth in Northern Ontario's Francophone communities (the region's official language minority community) and capitalize on economic opportunities made possible through linguistic duality.

"The Government of Canada is proud to invest in projects that stimulate the local economy by supporting emerging sectors such as cultural tourism. By assisting communities to work strategically and build on their inhenrent strengths, we are helping position Northern Ontario for long-term economic success."

– The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor

"West Nipissing has a thriving cultural and artistic industry. With this investment, CANO will continue to play an important role in positioning West Nipissing for growth and diversification while creating direct spin-off benefits for local businesses, the community and the region."

– Marc Serré, Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt

"Thanks to the Government of Canada, CANO continues to contribute to our region's diversification efforts by integrating an arts and culture sector into West Nipissing's municipal strategic planning, and by continuing to attract tourists to the region with our high-quality professional and amateur Francophone presentations."

– Marc Lavigne, President of the Board of Directors
