Government of Canada Invests to Support Economic Development and Cultural Tourism in Greater Sudbury
March 3, 2016 – Sudbury, ON – Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario – FedNor
Sudbury MP Paul Lefebvre, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor, today announced a Government of Canada investment to create employment and support key sectors of the local economy, including cultural tourism, economic development and business growth.
A FedNor investment of $240,340 will enable the Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario (TNO) to enhance the economic vitality of the official language minority community in Greater Sudbury and attract new visitors to the area through a three-year project. Specifically, the investment will be used to create a new development officer position; offer a surtitle service to allow Anglophones, Francophiles and exogamous families to enjoy TNO plays in real-time; modernize the ticketing system; improve facilities to increase rental opportunities; and promote the TNO over a wider area and in both official languages.
- The funding announced today is provided through FedNor's Economic Development Initiative (EDI), which helps foster the development of new expertise in innovation, economic diversification and business growth in Northern Ontario's Francophone communities (the region's official language minority community) and capitalize on economic opportunities made possible through linguistic duality.
- The Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario (TNO) presents annual theatre programming to a diverse audience. It is dedicated to theatrical creation and the development of Francophone arts in Northern Ontario and across the country. Throughout its 44 years of existence, the TNO has garnered numerous local, provincial and national awards and distinctions, including the Premier's Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2014.
"The Government of Canada is committed to supporting economic development, job creation, tourism and innovation in Northern Ontario. By supporting projects in Francophone communities, we are simultaneously supporting linguistic duality and strengthening the local economy."– The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor
"The Government of Canada is proud to invest in official language minority communities. In addition to supporting Francophone culture and providing activities that families of mixed cultures can enjoy as a whole, today's announcement will also contribute to the economic well-being of Greater Sudbury."– Paul Lefebvre, Member of Parliament for Sudbury
"We are thankful for this crucial contribution from the Government of Canada allowing us to grow, improve our offerings and reach a wider audience. Through our three-year multipronged project, we aim to attract new visitors, further promote Francophone arts and culture and take advantage of new technology."– Geneviève Pineault, Artistic Director, Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario
