Statement from the Minister of National Defence

February 27, 2016 – Ottawa, Ontario – National  Defence and Canadian Armed Forces

Defence Minister Harjit S. Sajjan issued the following statement to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the liberation of Kuwait:

“Today, as we mark the 25th anniversary of the liberation of Kuwait, we are reminded of Canada’s wartime achievements and proud military history.

“Operation FRICTION, as Canada’s military mission in the First Gulf War became known, saw more than 4,000 Canadian Armed Forces members serve in the Gulf region. In the aftermath of the conflict, Canada continued to contribute to peace-support operations and embargo-enforcement efforts in the region for several years.

“Today, Kuwait is a prosperous country and a steadfast friend with whom we share a vital defence relationship based on a shared commitment to bring peace and stability to the Middle East. Canada’s participation in the liberation of Kuwait 25 years ago is symbolic of our relationship, which we continue to build upon both bilaterally and together as members of the Global Coalition against ISIL.

“The contributions of the CAF during the First Gulf War are an important reflection of the values of freedom and democracy we carry with us today. I want to thank our members who served and continue to serve, to strengthen global peace and security.”
