Minister Dion concludes successful trip to Germany and Turkey

The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today concluded a successful trip to Germany and Turkey.

In Berlin, Minister Dion met with his German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The ministers exchanged views on pressing international concerns such as migration and the fight against ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant), and reaffirmed their countries’ solidarity toward Ukraine.

Minister Dion also met with policy and thought leaders in Germany, including Wolfgang Ischinger, Chairman of the Munich Security Conference, to discuss foreign and security policy issues.

Finally, Minister Dion took the opportunity to pay his respects to Jewish victims of the Holocaust during a visit to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

In Istanbul, Minister Dion participated in the High Level Partnership Forum on Somalia and reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to supporting a more stable and peaceful Somalia.

On the margins of this meeting, Minister Dion met with a number of counterparts, including Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, as well as with Somalia’s Prime Minister, Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, the African Union’s Commissioner for Peace and Security, Ambassador Smail Chergui, and Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Raychelle Awour Omamo.

Minister Dion also participated in a round table with members of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces to discuss ongoing efforts to bring an end to the Syrian conflict.

To conclude his trip, Minister Dion joined executives from Bombardier Inc. and representatives of Turkey’s airlines for a tour of a Bombardier CS100 aircraft.


“Germany is a key partner for Canada. We look forward to strengthening this important relationship and to advancing our common goals in the areas of international peace and security and climate change.

“With upcoming elections, this is a milestone year for Somalia. Canada will continue to support international efforts to help the country consolidate gains already made. This will help bring lasting peace, security and stability to Somalia, and the broader region.

“Canada supports the recent progress towards a ceasefire in Syria and calls on all parties to commit to the common goal of relieving the suffering of the Syrian people.”
