Government of Canada Invests to Create Youth Employment and Support a Strong Economy for Sudbury and Surrounding Areas

February 10, 2016 – Sudbury, ON – Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario – FedNor

MP Paul Lefebvre (Sudbury), on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor, today announced a Government of Canada investment to create jobs and support key sectors of the local economy, including tourism, technology and innovation, economic development and business growth.

A FedNor investment of $85,500 will enable three Sudbury-based businesses to hire a youth intern for a one-year period. While on the job, the interns will gain valuable work experience, performing tasks such as data collection, statistical analysis and activities linked to program implementation. While working as part of the reThink Green team, one of the interns will help deliver Sustainable Sudbury, a program designed to reduce the carbon impact of participating firms while increasing their profitability. The remaining two local organizations that will benefit from this announcement include the Sudbury Arts Council and Symboticware Incorporated.

Quick facts

  • This investment was provided through FedNor's Northern Ontario Development Program, which support projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation.
  • Since its inception, FedNor has helped provide more than 1525 young post-secondary graduates with their crucial first job, and assisted businesses and organizations in growing the economy by helping them access a qualified and talented workforce.
