Canada's Greenhouse Gas Emissions Projections in 2020 and 2030

Canada’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions projections in 2020 and 2030 (figure below) will be part of Canada’s Second Biennial Report on Climate Change that will be submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Environment and Climate Change Canada is currently finalizing the report with the provinces and territories.

The projections to 2020 and 2030 include current actions taken by governments, consumers and businesses, as well as the future impacts of policies and measures that have been put in place as of September 2015. These projections do not reflect the impact of additional federal, provincial or territorial measures that were announced since September 2015 or which are still under development.

Canada’s Emission Projections in 2020 and 2030 (Mt CO2 eq)

Long description of graph

Canada’s GHG emissions projections are projected to be 768 Mt CO2 eq in 2020 and 815 Mt CO2 eq in 2030.

The figure above shows the expected range of emissions in 2020 and in 2030 under different economic and energy price and production scenarios, not including contributions for the land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) sector.

The expected range of emissions is illustrative of the level of work we need to undertake, and Canada’s emissions projections should not be interpreted as a precise estimate: actual emissions will be determined by a range of as yet unknown developments in key drivers such as oil prices.

The Government of Canada will provide national leadership, and join with the provinces and territories to take action on climate change, put a price on carbon, and reduce carbon pollution.
