Minister Garneau addresses excessive fatigue in the rail sector

Transport Canada orders CP Rail to resolve scheduling issues

January 19, 2016 – Ottawa – Transport Canada

The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, issued this statement regarding excessive fatigue in the rail sector:

“As Minister of Transport, I am always concerned with the safety of railway operations.

“Transport Canada became aware that CP Rail did not comply with the Work/Rest Rules for Railway Operating Employees related to extended service run train crews. These issues were uncovered within a number of CP Rail locations within British Columbia.

“As a result, Transport Canada issued a Notice and Order to CP Rail on January 14, 2016, ordering the company to address issues related to fatigue and scheduling practices. The Order will remain in effect until the department is satisfied that the issues have been fully addressed.

“My department will continue to monitor the company closely. Transport Canada does not hesitate to take action as required to ensure the safety of Canada’s rail network.
