Minister McKenna congratulates Ontario on strong climate action

Ottawa, Ontario – November 25, 2015 On behalf of the Government of Canada, the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, welcomed Ontario’s announcement of its long-term strategy to fight climate change.

“Yesterday’s announcement confirms Ontario’s commitment to vigorous and long-term climate change action. Premier Kathleen Wynne has demonstrated significant climate leadership. The launch of Ontario’s five-year climate action plan is expected to produce even more measurable environmental results while presenting opportunities for growth in green technology sectors.

“The strategy announced yesterday in Ontario reflects the Government of Canada’s priorities and approach towards greenhouse gas reductions and actions on climate change.

“Our provincial and territorial partners have already begun to price carbon and take action by setting targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Canada is ready to join with the provinces and territories to take action on climate change, put a price on carbon, establish national emissions-reductions targets, reduce emissions and invest in clean technologies including energy efficiency for buildings and green and electric vehicles.

“Monday’s First Ministers’ meeting reinforced Canada’s determination to collaborate towards real and substantial climate change action. As we approach the start of COP21, this combined resolve to address climate change will position Canada to negotiate an effective international climate change agreement.”
