OTTAWA — The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today released the following statement concerning the accident involving VIA Rail in Burlington, Ontario.

“On behalf of Transport Canada, I would like to convey my condolences to the families of those killed in this tragic accident.

“We are cooperating fully with the Transportation Safety Board. Transport Canada has appointed a Minister’s observer who will keep me informed of the investigation’s progress.

“As those that were fatally involved in this accident were VIA employees, Transport Canada will conduct an investigation under the Canada Labour Code, Part II, into the circumstances of the incident.

“In addition, as always in such cases, the department will verify that the company continues to comply with all aspects of the Railway Safety Act.

“Transport Canada remains dedicated to keeping Canada's transportation system safe and secure. The department will continue to work with the Transportation Safety Board to do all it can to maintain and enhance the safety of Canada's rail sector.”
