January 20, 2015 – Cochrane, Ontario – Industry Canada/FedNor

The Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario (FedNor), announced today an investment by the Harper Government totalling $660,000 to support two strategic initiatives in the Town of Cochrane.

To increase tourism in the region, a FedNor investment of $400,000 will enable the community to expand its premier tourism attraction, the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat. Specifically, the funding will be used to create an enclosure so the polar bears can swim and fish in a more natural, wildlife-type setting. Once complete, this initiative will help attract more visitors to the area by creating a new tourist experience, unique to Northern Ontario.

To help accelerate economic development and growth in the community, a FedNor investment of $260,000 will enable the Town of Cochrane to expand the Tim Horton Events Centre to meet the immediate and future business needs of the region. This targeted investment will be used to increase floor space, install a movable partition and integrate advanced multi-media tools such as video conferencing.

  • The funding announced today is provided through FedNor's Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
