The Government of Canada invests in an improvement project at Tignish Harbour in 2014-2015

May 21, 2014 - Tignish, Prince Edward Island

The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced that the Government of Canada is investing in a major harbour project at Tignish Harbour. This project is supported by funding from Economic Action Plan 2014.

The harbour project at Tignish will consist of the partial reconstruction of a wharf, the construction of a wharf extension and the construction of shore protection.

Additional Prince Edward Island harbour projects will be announced at a later date.

Quick Facts

  • Fisheries and Oceans Canada undertakes projects in cooperation with the local harbour authorities that manage and operate the facilities for local users.
  • Economic Action Plan 2014 provided $40 million in additional funding over two years for repair, construction and maintenance projects at Canada’s small craft harbours.
  • The Small Craft Harbours Program is responsible for over 1000 small craft harbours across Canada.
  • Small craft harbours support nearly 90% of all fishing landings in Canada. In 2012, the landed value of Prince Edward Island fisheries was over $143 million.

“In communities like Tignish where the fishing industry is part of the daily fabric of society, small craft harbours play a significant role. The Tignish Harbour is homeport to the largest concentration of fishing vessels in Prince Edward Island. This investment is important to support local commercial fisheries and the future of our community.”
