Today, Lawrence Toet, Member of Parliament for Elmwood—Transcona, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding, under the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF), to the Transcona Playground Renewal Association for playground upgrades at the Oxford Heights Community Centre.

"I am thrilled that residents of Oxford Heights will benefit from a new playground, thanks to our Government's investment," said MP Toet. "Community centres play a key role in uniting communities and this investment will improve the Oxford Heights Community Centre while creating jobs, growth, and long-term prosperity."

With over $63,000 in federal funding, the playground will undergo a major transformation that includes the removal of old play equipment; installation of a new play structure and benches; construction of a limestone path; and new landscaping. The revitalized playground will be a welcome addition to the community centre and will improve the centre's programming.

"The Transcona Playground Renewal Association Inc. (TPRAI) is truly appreciative of the financial support received from Western Economic Diversification Canada. The support to upgrade the playground facility at Oxford Heights Community Centre is a visible example of the federal government support for developing youth based recreational facilities that encourage outdoor entertainment with fitness and health benefits," said Peter Martin, President. "Our MP for Elmwood-Transcona, Lawrence Toet, continues to demonstrate his support for many Transcona organizations such as the TPRAI by recommending funding opportunities that will improve our community for all the citizens so that Transcona can continue to be the showcase in which to live and raise a family."

CIIF supports, on a cost-shared basis, repairs and improvements to existing community infrastructure accessible to the public. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the Fund in Western Canada with an allocation of $46.2 million over two years.

Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating, small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
