Statement by Minister Qualtrough on the International Week of the Deaf
OTTAWA, September 19, 2016
The Government of Canada is committed to raising awareness of the invaluable contributions people with disabilities make in their communities and their workplaces. Ensuring that all Canadians have access to equal opportunities is in the best interest of all Canadians, and something that the Government of Canada has been working towards.
During the International Week of the Deaf, I invite you to join me in recognizing and celebrating the contributions that people who are deaf continue to make to Canadian society.
This year’s theme is “With Sign Language, I am Equal,” and will focus on promoting equality, accessibility, and unity for all individuals in the deaf community.
The Government of Canada recognizes the significance of this year’s theme. We are currently leading a consultation process with Canadians that will inform the development of planned accessibility legislation.
Throughout this consultation process, I am proud that we are offering important information and receiving feedback in both American Sign Language and Langue des signes québecoise. I am eager to receive ideas from all Canadians during the process and I invite and encourage everyone to get involved in the conversation at Canada.ca/Accessible-Canada.
I hope all Canadians take the time to recognize and appreciate the contributions that people who are deaf make to our country. By working with all Canadians, we will develop a more prosperous and inclusive society.
