International Trade Minister meets with her North American counterparts to discuss economic cooperation

May 2, 2016 - Washington, D.C. - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of International Trade, issued the following statement following today’s trilateral meeting with her U.S. and Mexican counterparts:

“Penny Pritzker, the United States Secretary of Commerce, today in Washington hosted Ildefonso Guajardo Villarreal, Mexico’s Secretary of Economy, and me at a meeting to discuss economic cooperation and competitiveness in North America. This was the first such trilateral meeting since 2014, and I am very pleased to have spent today engaging with my counterparts.

“North America is one of the most dynamic economic regions in the world. The annual value of merchandise trade within our continent alone is US$1.12 trillion. Our economies are deeply integrated, meaning good-paying jobs in Canada support jobs in the United States and Mexico, and vice versa.

“My colleagues and I endorsed the workplan for North American competitiveness in advance of the North American Leaders’ Summit. Together, we will pursue innovation and economic development, greater supply chain efficiency, and stakeholder consultations and outreach. This plan supports new initiatives for woman entrepreneurs, clean-energy partnerships, collaboration on patents and on cybersecurity, and new connections among our communities.

“I would like to thank Secretary Pritzker for hosting this meeting and for working, along with Secretary Guajardo and officials, to ensure that the Canada-United States-Mexico trading relationship continues to set a global standard for cooperation.”
