Canada celebrates 20th anniversary of Arctic Council

September 19, 2016 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement congratulating the Arctic Council on its 20th anniversary:

“The 20th anniversary of the council marks a proud moment for Canada. As an Arctic nation, we played a leading role in founding the council with the signing of the Ottawa Declaration, and the work we have accomplished with our international Arctic neighbours has been, and continues to be, vital for the Arctic region and its people.

“The council supports a global community that is working to better understand the constantly changing Arctic environment, for the benefit of northern residents and the world.

“Over the past 20 years, the council has advanced circumpolar priorities and has become a strong model for international cooperation.  A key reason for the council’s success is the contributions Arctic Indigenous peoples make to its decisions.

“Canada will continue to be a leading advocate for international cooperation, advancing sustainable development of the Arctic region in partnership with the other Arctic states and with Northerners.”
