Minister McKenna holds National Youth Summit on Climate Change

November 23, 2016 – Ottawa, ON – Office of the Minister of Environment and Climate Change

Youth have climate change solutions, and have thoughtful ideas about how best to create a sustainable, clean growth economy. Listening to this feedback is a priority for the Government of Canada.

Today, Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, hosted a National Youth Summit on Climate Change in Ottawa, and called on Canada’s youth to be part of its climate action. Over 100 youth from the Ottawa-Gatineau region attended the Summit, with more joining the conversation online and reaching well over 500,000 Canadians on social media through #YouthClimateAction.

Participants heard from experts on climate change, discussed issues that included sustainable food systems, transportation, clean energy, and communicating climate science, and offered innovative solutions that could be implemented at home and in their communities.

Following the Summit, Minister McKenna issued the following photos and quote on engaging Canada’s youth to be part of its climate action:

“The only way we can tackle climate change is if we all work together, and this includes young leaders. The Canadian youth recognize that we must think outside the box to discover innovative ways to address climate change, and I’m proud to include them in our ongoing conversation to accelerate Canada’s climate action.”
