Minister Bibeau announces new Canadian humanitarian funding at the World Humanitarian Summit
May 23, 2016 - Istanbul, Turkey - Global Affairs Canada
The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, today announced $274 million in humanitarian assistance at the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul, Turkey. The funding will be provided to United Nations humanitarian and development agencies to strengthen emergency response, ensure child protection in humanitarian crises and build long-term resilience to food insecurity.
Canada’s support will help address immediate hunger and food insecurity in Ethiopia, while improving resilience for the longer term. The country has been suffering from a serious drought and over 8 million Ethiopians are at risk.
Canada’s funding will also serve to protect children’s rights in armed conflict, especially those of girls, and advance child-protection responses in emergencies.
Support to the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) will provide emergency humanitarian assistance to those affected by natural disasters and armed conflicts around the world.
“We must act now because the number of people in need of urgent assistance has never been greater. Canada will continue to lead the way in developing and supporting innovative humanitarian programs. We are committed to making every dollar count to ensure the poorest and most vulnerable—especially women and girls—receive the care, assistance and protection they need to thrive.”
