8 Wing/CFB Trenton officially opened in August 1931. It originally consisted of 968 acres of farmland purchased because of its natural advantages as a land, plane, and seaplane station. Advantages include a moderate climate, as well as proximity to industrial and populated centers such as Ottawa and Toronto.
Over the years, the base has seen many changes and has fulfilled several different roles. Most Canadian Forces (CF) personnel and equipment deployed for overseas missions pass through Trenton at one time or another. Aircraft and personnel from 8 Wing/CFB Trenton are often involved in re-supplying Canadian Forces Station Alert, the world's northernmost inhabited location. As well, 8 Wing/CFB Trenton's 424 Squadron is responsible for providing search and rescue coverage over a one million square-kilometer area in central Canada.
Today, 8 Wing/CFB Trenton employs approximately 3,000 CF regular and reserve members and over 600 civilian employees, and is one of the largest and busiest air force bases in Canada. It acts is as a hub for air transport operations, and is involved in virtually every CF operation.
TRENTON CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
Since 2007, the Department of National Defence (DND) has announced more than $860 million to date in infrastructure upgrades for 8 Wing/CFB Trenton. This significant investment in Defence infrastructure will not only provide the CF with the infrastructure they need to help produce a first-class, modern military that is ready to take on the challenges of the 21st century, but will generate local economic benefits and create significant direct employment opportunities over the course of the work.
The majority of these projects are required to rebuild the flight line at 8 Wing/CFB Trenton in order to accommodate evolving tactical and strategic airlift capabilities, and are in various planning stages with construction to be undertaken in the coming years. These projects include:

Construction of Maintenance Hangar 1 – This project is part of the Airlift Capability Project-Strategic (ACP-S), and includes the construction of a purpose-built hangar capable of accommodating the specific maintenance requirements of the new C-17 Globemaster. This new facility will allow first and second line maintenance to be performed on Canada's new strategic airlifters under controlled environmental conditions. A contract for approximately $1.9 million was awarded to Dufferin Construction Company on July 20, 2009, to extend and realign the taxiway. Construction of the maintenance hangar is expected to start in winter 2009, and the construction contract will be awarded in the near future.
Construct Air Mobility Training Centre - This project will see the construction of a new 17,000 m2 facility that will house the equipment and personnel required to train operators and maintainers of the C‑130J Hercules aircraft. Construction of the hangar is expected to begin in fall 2009, and completion is anticipated for spring 2011.
Construct Electrical/Mechanical Engineering and Transportation Garage – Construction of a 17,452 m2 single consolidated facility that will house and support all Electrical Mechanical Engineering and Transport activity at 8 Wing Trenton and help amalgamate the chain of command and fleet/equipment management functions. Construction of the new garage will start in fall 2009, with completion expected by summer 2013.
Construct Aerospace and Telecommunications Engineering Support Squadron (ATESS) – Construction of a new facility to provide aircraft refinishing support to all sections within the Squadron, and all Air Force Wings. A construction contract was awarded to Buddy Haegele Enterprises Limited (BHE) of Belleville, Ontario on August 27, 2009 for $21,924,168. Construction of the new facility is expected to start fall 2009, with completion anticipated by summer 2011.
New Training Accommodation Building - Construction of a 99-room training accommodation building designed to meet today’s standard requirements for training lodgings. This facility was designed to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating and is part of an overall effort to modernize Canadian Forces accommodations across the country. Construction of the training accommodation building is expected to be completed by 2012.
Construct a Materiel Distribution Centre - Construction of a 350 m2 addition to the east of Hangar 1 to amalgamate supply and cargo handling on the flight line. The Government of Canada awarded a $2.5 million construction contract to Gay Company Ltd of Courtice, Ontario, on July 8, 2009, for the construction of the new centre. Construction of the centre has commenced, with completion anticipated by summer 2010.

Recapitalizing Taxiways and Aprons (South East) - Rebuilding of the remaining concrete apron on the east side of Hangar 10 to support the weight of a C-17 aircraft and to match the grades of the previously upgraded area on the northeastern portion. The project is currently underway.
Additional North West Ramp Construction - Construction of new concrete apron and associated taxiways to service the new long-term maintenance hangars to be constructed on the northwest side of the existing runway.
Upgrading Fuel Storage and Hydrant Distribution - Increasing the fuel storage capacity because of fuel demands of the C-17 aircraft and dispersing fuel hydrants throughout the south aprons to facilitate aircraft refueling. This project will also entail the construction of a storage capacity for fuel removed from aircraft.
Building a De-Icing Facility - Construction of an area designed to de-ice aircraft, apply an anti-icing product, store new de-icing and anti-icing products and to collect used products for disposal.
Providing New Office Accommodations - Provide a facility to house the administrative functions of the three operational transport squadrons along with the pilots and loadmasters of the aircraft at 8 Wing/CFB Trenton. This will allow for the co-location of these squadrons and other Wing operations.
Relocating Aircraft Maintenance Support Equipment (AMSE) / Shops and Demolish Hangars 5 & 6 - Provide interim accommodations for the occupants of existing Hangars 5 and 6 so these hangars can be demolished. The area adjacent to these hangars has been chosen for the Snag Recovery Hangar for both the C-17 and C-150 Polaris aircraft.
Replacing Maintenance Shops and Supply Stores - Relocation of the 8 Air Maintenance Squadron (AMS) secondary shops to the northwest side of the runway near the long-term maintenance hangars and to eventually facilitate the demolition of Hangar 10.
Providing Fire Protection / Suppression Distribution - Providing suitable and adequate fire suppression and fire fighting capability for all hangars at 8 Wing/CFB Trenton.
Upgrading Utilities / Roads - Upgrading and realigning existing roads and underground utilities to coincide with the location and needs of the new hangars and upcoming related infrastructure.
Replacing and Upgrading the Fire Hall - Replacing the existing fire hall to accommodate new firefighting equipment required due to the permanent stationing of C-17 aircraft at Trenton, and to meet the required response times to any location on the airfield.
Recapitalizing Apron (West) - Reconstruction of the concrete apron on the west side of Hangar 10 to correct drainage problems, to coordinate with the finished floor elevations of the new hangars to be constructed and to compensate for the loss of aircraft parking location due to the increased size of the new hangars being constructed.
Relocating Canadian Forces Advanced Land Warfare Centre and Demolish Hangars 7 & 8 - Relocation of the occupants of Hangar 7 and 8 to facilitate the demolition of this structure, as this is the chosen location for the hangars required for the C-130J aircraft.
Constructing Canadian Forces Aerospace Warfare Centre - Construction of a new multi purpose facility for the Canadian Forces Aerospace Warfare Centre. This will include the reconstruction of sports fields displaced for the construction of the new facility, and the demolition of the unit’s current interim accommodations.

Construct Air Traffic Control Tower - The aging air traffic control tower no longer met operational requirements. A new tower was built in accordance with NAV Canada standards and the existing tower will be demolished.
Reconstruction of Taxiways, and Recapitalization and Expansion of the Northeast Ramp -Two existing Taxiways will be reconstructed and an expansion of a ramp space will take place to provide four parking areas in preparation for the arrival of the C-17s. The existing parking area is sufficient for short term parking; however, would not accommodate the four C-17s that will be permanently based out of 8 Wing/CFB Trenton. The recapitalization of the ramps will include features such as sloped surfaces for drainage, open ditches, and underground storm water piping.
