U.S. Air Force General Robinson assumes command of NORAD, USNORTHCOM

May 13, 2016 – Peterson Air Force Base, Colo. – National Defence/Canadian Armed Forces

United States Air Force Gen Lori Robinson assumed command of the North American Aerospace Defence Command and U.S. Northern Command from Navy Adm Bill Gortney during a ceremony held today at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado. 

Following remarks from U.S. Secretary of Defense, Ash Carter and Canadian Minister of National Defence, The Hon. Harjit S. Sajjan, the traditional change of command ceremony was presided over by Secretary Carter and the Canadian Chief of the Defence Staff, Gen Jonathan Vance. Also in attendance was the U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen Joseph Dunford, Jr.

NORAD is a U.S. and Canadian bi-national organization charged with the missions of aerospace warning, aerospace control and maritime warning for North America; while U.S. Northern Command is the United States-only Combatant Command responsible for homeland defense efforts and coordination of defense support of civil authorities within the U.S.
